Christina Nicola Announces Artistic Name Change to NICOLA
A New Chapter in a Decade-Spanning Multidisciplinary Practice
New York, NY — After over a decade of exhibiting under the name Christina Nicola, the multidisciplinary artist known for her poetic approach to Afrosurrealism and time-based figuration is embracing a new era: moving forward, she will create and exhibit under the singular name NICOLA.
This intentional shift marks a deepening of the artist’s ongoing exploration of identity, nonlinear time, and personal mythology. While NICOLA’s work has long transcended category—merging sculpture, painting, drawing, and installation—the name change signals a bolder clarity of vision.
“I’ve always followed what moves me, even if it meant my work looked radically different each time,” NICOLA says. “Choosing ‘NICOLA’ is about trusting the creative instinct more fully, about letting myself become boundless.”
Known for her life-sized cutout figures, ethereal palettes, and immersive installations that bridge abstraction and narrative, NICOLA has shown work in museums, international fairs, and major galleries. With An Afroromantic Primer, NICOLA announces her participation with Afroromanticism and launches a new body of work.
Though her professional name is changing, NICOLA emphasizes that her personal roots remain intact.
“Friends and family are welcome to keep calling me Christina,” she shares. “Using ‘NICOLA’ professionally allows me to move with full artistic agency while keeping my family name close to heart.”
This transition arrives at a pivotal moment: NICOLA recently unveiled seven new works introducing her reimagined palette and thematic evolution, and is preparing multiple projects under her newly launched Afroromanticism framework—including a fall exhibition, a traveling European presentation, and an interdisciplinary blog series.
For collectors, collaborators, and institutions, NICOLA’s name change is not a departure—it is an arrival.
