“I’ve always been interested in mixed media work–it just speaks to me and excites me in a different way.

My work has always been very explorative. From painting on plexiglass to drawing from life, my experiments in art school and beyond eventually pointed me to my approach to art: A painterly sort of draftsmanship that centers black womxn.”

“I think mostly because my work started with self-portraits and I know the female body the best. I think there’s that and also when I was doing charcoal drawings, people would always say, “Oh they’re Black.”

Sometimes I’d draw a non-black person but because it’s charcoal they appeared black. I think that led me to focus on black figures. I know that Kerry James Marshall says that he never drew a white person, one day he just decided not to. I think it’s important to be intentional about who you’re going to paint.”

VOYAGE MIA

As a black artist, conditions in the art world are particularly inspiring.

This is the first generation of artists that are living and creating in a time when the art world is actively supporting black art and black artists on a global scale.

Though some detractors may reduce this to a trend, the world will never tire of seeing and celebrating the black figure and form, just as I’ll never tire of portraying it.
